The International Airport of Munich (Franz Josef Strauss International Airport) is located 28 km north-east from Munich and is the main airport for Lufthansa, the main German airline company; several airlines that belong to the Star Alliance are also based here. More than 30 million passengers pass through the Munich airport every year (34 million in 2007): this makes it the second most important airport in Germany.

The airport is composed by two terminals connected by a central structure (MAC, Munich Airport Center), an area dedicated to shopping and business.

Terminal 1 mainly hosts airline companies that are not part of the Star Alliance (more than 60 airline companies), such as Air Berlin, British Airways, Delta Airlines, Aeroflot, Air Baltic, CSA Czech Airlines, TAROM, Aer Lingus, Air France, Alitalia, Brussels Airlines, clickair, easyJet, Iberia, KLM, Norwegian Air Shuttle, Olympic Airlines. Hall F of Terminal 1 is a secure terminal used by Israeli airline companies. Passengers going directly to Israel wait here to be transported by bus and to board safely under federal police surveillance.
Terminal 2 is the terminal where airline companies which are part of the Star Alliance operate: Condor, Germanwings, Air China, Austrian Airlines, Carpatair, LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, SAS, Swiss, TAP Portugal, Thai Airways International.
