The Madrid Barajas airport has been open for traffic since 1931. It is the largest airport in Spain and a major European hub for direct flights to South America. In terms of passenger traffic, it is one of the most significant airports in Europe, along with London Heathrow, Schipol airport in Amsterdam, the Frankfurt airport and Charles de Gaulle in Paris.

There are four terminals in Madrid Barajas, which are architecturally significant and cover a huge area of one million square meters: the T1, the T2 and the T3 host the worldwide alliances airlines SkyTeam and Star Alliance; the T4 (and the T4-S, a satellite building of the T4), which is the most recently constructed terminal, hosts all of the Iberia domestic and international flights and all of the airlines which are part of the Oneworld air alliance.
The T4 is 2 km away from the other terminals. The terminals are connected with one another through a free bus service; the new T4 area is also connected to the rest of the airport through the line 8 of the metro. The two buildings of Terminal 4 (T4 and T4-S) are connected by an underground electric train.

How to reach Madrid from the Madrid Barajas airport

The Madrid Barajas airport is located northeast of Madrid, 20 km away from the city centre. There are taxi stops opposite the Arrivals area in each terminal, although public transport is also an option to get to Madrid. The metro connects the airport with the city centre, the Nuevos Ministerios station and other main railway stations; there is also a shuttle bus running from the airport to the city centre (Avenida de América).
