The Airport of Frankfurt am Main (Rhein-Main-Airport) is the largest airport in Germany and is found in the region of Hessen, 12 km south-west from the centre of Frankfurt. The Frankfurt airport is focused on cargo transport, while low cost flights are mainly at the Frankfurt Hahn airport, 120 km away.
Frankfurt airport has two large terminals. Terminal 1 is the oldest (1972) and largest of the two main terminals. The following are amongst the main airline companies present in Terminal 1: Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa, SAS, Spanair, Aeroflot, Alitalia, LOT Polish Airlines, TAP Portugal, American Airlines.
Terminal 2 can be accessed directly by car, bus and inter-terminal transfer (SkyLine) from Terminal 1. The following are amongst the airline companies present in Terminal 2: Aer Lingus, Air France, CSA Czech Airlines, Delta Airlines, Air Berlin, British Airways, Iberia, Qantas.
How to get to Frankfurt am Main Airport
There are two train stations in the Frankfurt airport:
- the station for regional trains in Terminal 1 provides access to metropolitan railway (S-Bahn) lines S8 and S9.
- the station for long-distance trains is the point of arrival from the Cologne-Frankfurt high speed line. The station is connected to Terminal 1; the arriving passengers can check-in directly at the train station for about sixty airlines.
There are also numerous connections to the airport by bus.
