On the northern shore of Lake Ontario lays Canada’s largest city, Toronto, the provincial capital of Ontario. Toronto is wonderful ethnically diverse metropolis with a great number of skyscrapers and iconic buildings colouring its skyline. With a population of over 2 million it is the fourth most populated city in all of North America and has quickly become a leading centre for business, art, finance and culture. Toronto was founded in the late 1700’s by the British, who named this great city ‘York’. Almost anywhere in the city visitors are able to catch a glimpse of Toronto’s iconic CN Tower, one of the seven wonders of the modern world and over 1800 ft high it towers of the skyline and other skyscrapers, after its completion in 1976 it was the world’s tallest freestanding structure and now almost 40 years later its now the third tallest in the western hemisphere. Another popular place of interest among tourists and locals alike is the wonderful Art Gallery of Ontario – AGO for short, where art is fused with architecture to create incredible masterpieces for the public viewing.
Locals delight in the fact that the groundbreaking art gallery was designed by a local called Frank Gehry who would take pleasure in visiting the original gallery as a young child. For the more historically stimulated, visitors are allowed to visit the Gothic Revival styled castle ‘Casa Loma’ in midtown Toronto. This delightful house castle was built in the early 1900’s and was used originally as residence for Sir Henry Pellatt however more recently is has become an iconic landmark and a museum. Even though a populated city centre, Toronto has many green area parks for visitors and locals to relax and kick back in for a while, such as High Park, Marie Curtis Park and Trinity Bellwoods Park. Most of these parks have fun activities going along daily and also boast a great many hiking trails, sports fields, playgrounds and even zoo’s.
Toronto is renowned for mixing its classical and historical culture with the more modern and trendy styles of today. Around the city visitors can see a many examples of this starting from Toronto’s rejuvenated distillery district which has become a playground and restaurant area, to the Royal Ontario museum in which tourists can observe the artefacts of Toronto’s original peoples the Aboriginals along with paintings and other art forms of the country’s past and other art works from across the world.
Any sports fan will be thrilled to find out about the Rogers Center where they can catch a game, and after visit the nearby hockey hall of fame to view past and presents legends of the game. Shoppers will be ecstatic to find themselves in this metropolis with a massive range of shopping stores and markets. From the high end designer clothes to the traditional and original Tibetan vintage clothing Toronto’s got it all. Shoppers can swarm themselves in massive shopping malls in, around and sometimes even under the city. For when it comes time for lunch and dinner you simply can’t go wrong in Toronto from traditional Hogtown pubs to Italian and Greek restaurants there’s defiantly something for the whole family.
Finally the last and probably the most important thing to do on a visit to Toronto is taking a day trip to the magnificent Niagara Falls, where each year millions of people flock from across the world to view the spectacular natural wonders.
