Virgin Atlantic history

Virgin Atlantic was founded in 1984 as British Atlantic Airways, which was originally planned to fly between London and the Falkland Islands. Soon after however the name was changed to Virgin Atlantic Airways and the company too to the skies in 1984 with a flight from Gatwick to Newark Liberty International Airport, USA. The British airline's head office is based in Crawley, West Sussex, England. Although main hubs are London Gatwick and Heathrow, the airline also operates flights out of Manchester Airport and seasonally out of Glasgow Airport. Virgin Atlanta today operates scheduled services between United Kingdom, North America, the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East and Asia. Virgin Atlantic carried more than 5 million passengers in 2012, making it the seventh largest airline in the UK in terms of passenger volume. The year 2014 sees Virgin Airlines scrap flights to Sydney, Tokyo, Mumbai, Vancouver and Cape Town in order to code-share the transatlantic flights with Delta Air Lines.

News

Virgin Atlantic Airways is constantly evolving and developing its product offering. Stay updated with the latest news.

November 2014 - Virgin Atlantic to make Gatwick fleet decision next yearIt is likely that the airline Virgin Atlantic will need to make a decision in the next five to nine months over which type of aircraft will replace its fleet of seven Boeing 747s based at London's Gatwick Airport.

The airline Virgin Atlantic, which is 51 percent owned by Richard Branson and 49 percent by Delta Air Lines, said it was looking at their options as the leases on the 747s expire in 2019.

These aircrafts are predominantly used to serve leisure routes.

The first 787-9 Dreamliner was received earlier this year for use on services from London's Heathrow airport. It has another 21 on order and with an aim of phasing out the less fuel-efficient aircrafts like the 747.

October 2014 - Virgin's B787-9 Dreamliner, it's first, launched with a flight to Boston this month.

Temporarily swapping the aircraft for an A340-600 for two weeks until mid November, but once back, the Dreamliner will serve the US city six-times weekly from London Heathrow, with Washington DC and New York JFK/Newark in the next five months.

So what can passengers expect? Virgin's Dreamliner can accommodate 264 passengers, with 31 Upper Class class seats that flip over to create fully-flat beds, 35 seats in premium economy and 198 in economy.

There is on-demand entertainment featuring about 60 movies, 70 hours of TV and 285 music albums. There is also a seat chat function for sending messages to other passengers. Wifi is also available for purchase for the duration of the journey costing £14.99.
