Ryanair

Airline tickets with Ryanair

Ryanair is a home-grown Irish airline from Swords, Dublin. Beginning in 1984 as a small-time 15-seater en route from Waterford to Gatwick airport, it has since blossomed into one of the largest carriers in all of Europe.

Focused on disrupting the duopoly between British Airways and Aer Lingus and becoming Europe’s go-to low-cost airline, 2013 found Ryanair to be not only the largest European airline based on passenger volume, but also the world’s busiest and most popular international airline; again, based on passenger volume.

After Europe’s aviation industry deregulation in 1997, Ryanair experienced incredibly fast and wide-reaching expansion due to their massively successful low-cost business model. Since then, Ryanair has expanded their route network to serve over 32 countries spanning three continents (Europe, Africa, and Asia.)

Ryanair has always prided itself for constantly remaining on the cusp of technological innovation. They were one of the first airlines in the world to have a website and allow online booking through its portal.

They aimed to decrease the customer cost of booking a flight by cutting out the previously necessary middleman, the travel agent. By the end of the year, three-quarters of all of Ryanair’s bookings were made online. Ryanair also piloted the online check-in movement, to save passengers time from waiting to check-in at the airport.

Ryanair has over 70 bases of operation throughout Europe and North Africa. Though they often fly in to airports located slightly outside of major cities in order to save their passengers on airfare costs, they also service major airports such as Manchester, London-Gatwick, Marseille, Rome-Fiumicino, Athens, Barcelona El-Prat, Madrid Barajas, Lisbon, Budapest, Brussels Zaventem, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Dublin, and Edinburgh.

They also cater especially to the beach lovers by flying to the Canary Islands, Malta, Cyprus, and the Greek Islands.

Ryanair Check in Procedures

Be sure to arrive at least half an hour before boarding begins, as boarding ends 20 minutes before takeoff. Late passengers will unfortunately not be permitted to board.

All passengers are required to check-in online at Ryainair’s Booking page. You can check-in as late as four hours before your flight or as early as thirty days before your flight (seven days for those without a pre-booked flyer.) You are able to print your boarding pass up to two hours before your scheduled flight. Make sure that you have your boarding pass before attempting to board, otherwise a re-issue fee will be applied.

All non-EU passengers are required to be processed through customs before proceeding through airport security.

Ryanair News

Just in time for the summer travel season, Ryanair has announced that it is slashing its checked baggage fees by as much as 50%.

Throughout the summer months, 2-hour domestic flight checked bags weighing less than 34 pounds will now cost just €15 (down from €30.) Over 34 pounds will cost €30. Travellers who check a bag under 34 pounds on flights lasting over 3 hours will pay €25. Checked baggage prices for flights over 3 hours will remain the same.

Ryanair predicts this move to save their passengers 92% in both ticket prices and baggage fees. This is just one of their many upcoming moves focused on reducing passenger ticket prices even further.

Ryanair Baggage Allowance

Ryanair allows passengers one 10kg carry-on (maximum dimensions at 55cm x 40cm x 20cm) as well as an additional smaller bag (maximum of 35cm x 20cm x 20cm.)

Even though Ryanair cabins only allow for up to 90 bags inside the cabin, those who have purchased Priority Boarding will not be required to place their baggage in the aircraft hold if cabin storage room runs short.

If you are unsure of your luggage size, you can always double check it at the Bag Drop desk before entering security.
